Another Era Ends

Dromana Post Office - recently next to St Mark's Church on the Nepean Highway in Dromana - has been re-invented with new faces since being opened in 1858 - almost 20 years before Dromana pier opened in 1872.
But now it has actually been relocated -temporarily, joining the many little shops in the Dromana Hub shopping centre.
In the meantime a 3 storey construction begins on this site. It will house apartments, two shops and a cafe and the post office will be back here at street level with another new face!

Fishing on Dromana Pier

Fishing on Dromana pier overlooking Port Phillip Bay is a popular past time - even in the winter time.
The pier was built in 1862 and then extended in 1873.
It is the second longest pier in Port Phillip Bay - exceeded only by Port Melbourne's Station Pier opened in 1854.
Originally, the pier was used by a large fishing fleet and local producers, as no road transport to Melbourne markets was available.

The navy's “explosive and munitions research branch“ used the pier to load and unload munitions from their vessels.
Evidence can still be found under the sands!

The old wooden pier was superseded in 1960 by the new concrete one seen today!

White Feathered Unknown

A character doing some dreaming in small wetlands near my home in the Dromana Hills.
(I have tried to find out what this bird is but still don't know!)

Lord of the wetlands
Wanders a lonely journey
Always attracts space

P.S. It appears that this is a white Muscovy duck! It is most unusual to see a Muscovy in the chilly climes - apart from summer - of the Mornington Peninsula.
They are more farm ducks than creek/wetland ducks.
Most unusual to see them in Australia when they originate in the more tropical areas of Brazil and Mexico.

There is even a wartime story about a Muscovy Duck called Corporal Haggis who fought in World War 2.

Kites in the Clouds

Cloud patterns make an interesting canvas for kite flying at the Rosebud Kite Festival by Port Phillip Bay.
NOTE: The crowds of people are kept back by barriers round the immediate flying area! Hence this apparent space.
