I'm from the U.S. and had only known of the Kookaburra from the song about the old gum tree. They are pretty little birds.
Like Blooming Psycho said, I only knew of the kookaburra from the song - and this song was a favorite of my father-in-laws who used to sing it for my kids all the time.. he passed away last September and is still sorely missed and fondly remembered..
