I is for islands...
(Continuing my series on the Mornington Peninsula)


Just offshore from the peninsula, in Westernport Bay, are two islands.
One is French Island - accessed by ferry from Stony Point on the peninsula
- and the larger one is Phillip Island
- acessed by ferry from Stony Point or car via the bridge from San Remo on the mainland.
Highlights of Phillip Island include an extensive conservation park - with an area where fairy penguins may be viewed + a grand prix circuit + shopping wonderland at Cowes near where the ferry docks + extensive holiday accommodation.
My photo above is a view of the coastline round the island as viewed from the popular penguin parade viewing area at Summerlands (where Ventnor and Back Beach Road meet).
(I still have not been to French Island, but I have been to Phillip.)


Here is the bridge linking the mainland and Phillip Island.
As can be seen in the photo, the island is quite close to the mainland.

Fairy penguins are best viewed in the evening hours as they wander in from the sea to their burrows.
But during the day, their busy activity can be heard under these boardwalks.

This area once had homes on properties.
But the government reclaimed them to preserve the nature of the area and has begun plantings representing original plants here.
