A Peninsula Hospital

An old cottage that has now been incorporated into the small Rosebud Hospital complex on the Mornington Peninsula.
Rosebud Hospital is a public hospital which opened in 1961.
It is the only public hospital on the southern end of the penisula.
The rambling Frankston Hospital stands at the gateway to the peninsula.

At this time last year...

At this time last year, early Autumn skies were blue and sunlight still lingered with warmth.
(This year, days of heavy winds, grey skies and rollercoaster humidity play havoc with the psyche.)

Sign of Old Times

I love signs that give a thumbnail glimpse of the history of an immediate area.
And there are plenty of such signs at Mornington on Port Phillip Bay.
Love how this one includes the original cost of the post office.

Recently, the Mornington Peninsula celebrated the annual Kite Festival on the Rosebud foreshore on Port Phillip Bay.
The day of the main festival - Sunday - drew huge crowds on a hot day, but there was little wind.
(Fortunately, there were many other attractions for the huge crowd!)


The best viewing of the kites was on the Saturday - when the kite flyers were practising and there were few people.

Yellow Bike

This bike was parked on the Rosebud foreshore.
Perhaps the owner was participating in the Kite Festival 2013 activities!
But the numberplate is interesting.
VIC - registered in Victoria Australia
NZCHK - implies New Zealand chick - a girl from New Zealand who likes to keep her ties alive!

Even robots have shadows...

One of the alternative attractions at the recent Rosebud Kite Festival on the foreshore of Port Phillip Bay.
And this particular robot is proudly showing off a baby robot - not easy to capture with the milling crowds!

J is for jet ski...

J is for jet ski...

Whether we like it or not,
jet skis are a feature of the water worlds of Port Phillip Bay, right along the Mornington Peninsula.
The one captured above was trailing the wake of the Queenscliff-Sorrento ferry.
He fell off a number of times, but righted the skis and continued on.


The waves were hardly smoothe!


At times, the skis seemed to submerge beneath the waves.

Strange Shed

This shed is strange.
It does not fit the mould of the other boat sheds along Dromana beach.
Unlike the other boat sheds facing the sea, this shed's door faces away.
The other boat sheds are rectangular, while this one is a chunky square.
I have never seen it open.
But it has been re-painted in recent years.
It used to be a grotty, peeling pale yellow.
In old records, it states that there used to be a small lock up by Dromana beach, away from the main village.
But I can't find any trace of exactly where.
Could this be?
The police station is not far...but then, is that the original siting of the police station?

Pelican Pantry Cafe

A side view of Pelican Pantry Cafe near the waterfront at Hastings.
This is an unusual cafe because it is a training facility for disadvantaged and long-term unemployed youth.
The Pelican Pantry Cafe boasts a 95 percent success rate for its nearly 400 graduates.
Pelicans were once a major feature of the waterfront, but now the old fish shed is closed, their numbers have declined.

Kite Signs

Last weekend was the Victorian Labour Day long weekend.
And on that weekend, the Mornington Peninsula celebrated the annual Kite Festival at Rosebud by the beach.
The actual festival is on the Sunday.
But Saturday is a great day to get photos of the kites without jostling crowds
- because on Saturday the kite flyers take their kites for a test run.
That is when I took this photo of some banner signs identifying a kite flyer's experience.
Dieppe Kite International is held in North America in August each year.

I is for islands...

I is for islands...
(Continuing my series on the Mornington Peninsula)


Just offshore from the peninsula, in Westernport Bay, are two islands.
One is French Island - accessed by ferry from Stony Point on the peninsula
- and the larger one is Phillip Island
- acessed by ferry from Stony Point or car via the bridge from San Remo on the mainland.
Highlights of Phillip Island include an extensive conservation park - with an area where fairy penguins may be viewed + a grand prix circuit + shopping wonderland at Cowes near where the ferry docks + extensive holiday accommodation.
My photo above is a view of the coastline round the island as viewed from the popular penguin parade viewing area at Summerlands (where Ventnor and Back Beach Road meet).
(I still have not been to French Island, but I have been to Phillip.)


Here is the bridge linking the mainland and Phillip Island.
As can be seen in the photo, the island is quite close to the mainland.

Fairy penguins are best viewed in the evening hours as they wander in from the sea to their burrows.
But during the day, their busy activity can be heard under these boardwalks.

Part of the landscape round the fairy penguin information centre.
This area once had homes on properties.
But the government reclaimed them to preserve the nature of the area and has begun plantings representing original plants here.
