I could only photograph the sign from an angle because it was in the carpark

Coolart wetlands today...

Today's view of a nesting area for ibises at Coolart wetlands, Somers
and the first day of real sunshine in weeks...
Compared with previous years at this time,
I felt the nesting island seemed smaller and the ibises fewer...
Perhaps all the rain and cool winds have reduced nesting numbers here...

cannon in a garden...

historic cannon in the garden of the Churchill Island Heritage Farm...
The cannon is believed to have been given to Samuel Amess
by his friend and neighbour from nearby Cape Woolamai - Captain John Cleeland.
Perhaps it was his [Cleeland's] sea going experience which led him to extend hospitality to Lt. James Waddell of the Confederate raider the Shenandoah when she visited Melbourne in 1865. The vessel had sailed 44,000 miles in an epic raiding voyage during which she touched port only twice. Obviously impressed by the warm welcome afforded by Cleeland, Lt Waddell responded by leaving a cannon and some cannon balls. Today the cannon can be seen in front of the Churchill Island homestead.

Coolart last year...

view of the old Coolart homestead at Somers, this time last year...
(The weather was sunny in those days...)
Re the history of the homestead,
in 1895, Frederick Sheppard Grimwade bought the estate
and built the imposing homestead as the family's country retreat.

sign on a rock...

memorial plaque on a rock at Queenscliff Lighthouse Reserve above Queenscliff beach...
The sign commemorates the sea voyage of Paul Caffyn in 1981...
He made the first solo attempt to circumnavigate Australia by sea kayak...
Paul left this area 28th December, 1981 and on 23rd December 1982,
returned to this same beach after completing the 17,400km voyage.
(The Dreamtime Voyage title represents a nod to our aboriginal peoples and their Dreaming culture)
